The First Appointment
Many people are apprehensive about a first appointment with a psychologist, especially when they need to address sexual concerns. However, a first appointment can be a very dignified and positive clinical experience.
The initial appointment is an opportunity for the individual or couple to describe their problems, concerns, and treatment goals in specific detail.
A wide variety of questions will be asked. Topics may include:
marital or relationship conflicts; communication problems;
specific health and medical issues; traumatic experiences;
lifestyle and hobbies; work and family information;
specific aspects of sexual functioning, past and present;
emotional concerns involving anxiety, depression, anger, shame,
and/or guilt; and previous psychotherapy & marital/couples therapy.
Dr. Friedin will give diagnostic impressions, prognostic impressions, and a general description of the therapeutic format being recommended. Depending on the nature of your problems, a medical referral may be helpful. You may want your physician to confer with Dr. Friedin.
Insurance and fees will be discussed and clarified.
You will have an opportunity to ask questions.
Overall, you are likely to find that the first appointment will be a professional and comforting experience.
